A postman definitely CAN take outgoing mail. That is why the mailboxes that sit in front of privately-owned home have a flag on their mailbox. When the flag is up the postman is to stop and take outgoing mail from the box. Also, in an apartment or condominium complex there has always been, in my experience, a separate box for outgoing mail, although I have had to look for it a few times.

Just piling on here--it's really a bad idea to leave outgoing mail. That's one of the main ways identity thieves get your information.

Just mail your letter on your way to work or when you run errands.

The green mailboxes are known as mail relay boxes. They are used by the Postal Service to distribute mail. Carriers pick up the mail from the relay boxes and then visit their appointed rounds.

In many apartments, mail boxes are for delivery only. It's a pain, I know and feel your pain. It actually does have some safety concerns involved. when you go out a do stuff, that's when you should drop off outgoing mail. Such as when on the way to work or school. In fact many schools have regular mail collection boxes and most offices, you simply put your mail in the outgoing mail (that's what I do).

Report her. Call the nearest branch and report it. If that doesn't work check the postal service website.

Good luck.

Sounds like you're new to big city living. The rules are different when there are a lot of people crammed into one area. Say you live in a small high rise of say 10 floors with 10 apts on each floor, that is equal to 1,000 mail boxes. Bet the town you moved from didn't even have a thousand people in it. Give your mail carrier a break and take your letters to work with you an mail them from there.

The green mailboxes are used to store mail for the carrier to pick up and deliver to other addresses. City mail carriers get little carts to haul the mail around in and they WALK to make the deliveries, the rural carriers get a jeep and just lean out theur window to stuff mail boxes.

Where does she deliver the mail to you? In a box? There should be some type of outgoing mail arrangement.

If she is rude, I'd call the post office and ask to speak to her manager or supervisor. Maybe she is just lazy.

Wow-- I just went back and read some of the other answers.., that's weird "delivery only" and has never been in any place I lived.., but the outgoing mail thing..., here in the city I live in in California.., my mail box (which is shared with about 10 other houses) has a special outgoing mail box that is locked. So identity fraud is not at issue.., and here I thought the mail carrier was supposed to actually deliver mail for you..., how odd??

Half a mile is only four city blocks. It's not even far. But as others pointed out, surely you leave your apartment to run errands and go to work. It is doubtful that you cannot find a single mailbox and/or post office near any of your stops.

In a true city, you walk. Chicago is dense. It's possible to walk places here. Some of us don't even own or drive cars, and that's not considered odd.

First only the extreme elderly leave mail for the postal person to take. Really, that's how it is in Chicago. Second, you should not leave outgoing mail anyway, it is a great way to have identity theft. Don't you read the newspapers?

The green mailboxes are relay boxes, the mail to be delivered is there, the postman can open it and deliver more mail without going all the way back to the office. (they say right on them "relay boxes")

There are mailboxes on ever other corner, why can't you drop it off like everybody else?

Walk to a mailbox, dingbat! There's one on like every street corner here! Maybe walk the other direction obecause I know there's one closer than a half mile from you.

Mailmen don't play outgoing mail here. It's not the end of the world if you have to walk a block. And remember, nobody likes a complainer.
