You should be aware that just like any other US city it depends on which neighborhood you are in. Downtown and northside is pretty safe.

It all depends on the area you will be staying in... for the most part hotels near the airport are pretty safe/nice and downtown in River North, the Loop, etc are usually good. It all comes down to common sense, as well. You know... don't walk around at night alone, lock your doors, etc etc! Have fun - it's a great city!!!
