1) You do not currently need a passport to get into Canada, but if you don't have one, you should have a certified copy of your birth certificate to prove nationality to get back into the U.S.

2) Depending on when you are going (so check your dates) you might be able to check out Indy 500 timetrials when you pass through Indianapolis; Chicago should have either the Cubs or White Sox in town and watching either play is a great experience; Millenium Park in Chicago is also cool, as are most of the museums. If you want your picture on a box of Corn Flakes, don't forget to stop in Kalamazoo, Michigan for Cereal City, run by Kelloggs. Just before you get to Canada, Detroit offers the Tigers and the Red Wings (if either are home).

1) No passport, but you might have trouble getting back IN the US.

2.) Chicago is all you'll ever need to see. Take the river cruise, not the lake cruise. Then hit the North Avenue Beach, the Near North Side, Wrigleyville, ethnic restaurants, blues clubs, Wicker Park/Bucktown, museums, and the Shedd Aquarium. Avoid Navy Pier, its a tourist trap. Milllenium Park is cool.

don't think you need a passport but it is better to have one and not need it, then need it and not have it.

while in chi-town stop at any harolds' resurant if you like good, cheap, and fast fried chicken. However, what way are you taking to chicago, if you take the 65 south then you will miss some sites. Take the illinois route, 24 north then 57 north I think thats right!!!
